On late-model commercial diesels, aftertreatment faults are a common cause. Shop-level diagnostics allow the technician to read active and stored fault codes, review live data, check regeneration status, monitor exhaust temperatures and differential pressure, and determine whether the truck is eligible for a parked regeneration. The diagnostic process identifies whether the derate is caused by a condition that can be repaired immediately or a problem requiring more extensive work.
For example, a truck with a DPF loading issue may recover after the technician corrects the cause of the failed regeneration and performs an approved parked regen. A damaged sensor connector, failed sensor, wiring issue, air leak, or serviceable aftertreatment component may also be addressed on site. If the ECM detects the same problem again, the derate returns. In some cases, continued operation can escalate the fault and leave the truck with even less power or a start restriction.
A real roadside derate repair follows the fault path. The technician confirms the code, checks related data, inspects the components and wiring involved, and determines what caused the condition. If a parked regen is necessary, it must be performed only after the system is checked for conditions that could make regeneration unsafe or ineffective.
This matters most with emissions faults. A forced or parked regeneration will not solve every DPF-related code. If the DPF is loaded because an exhaust temperature sensor is inaccurate, an injector is not dosing correctly, there is an exhaust leak, or the engine is producing excessive soot, the same issue can return quickly. The goal is to restore normal operation, not just remove a message from the dashboard.
Common derate causes a mobile diesel technician can diagnose
Roadside diagnostics are especially valuable because derate faults often come with multiple codes and confusing dash messages. The warning may point to the aftertreatment system, while the root cause is a failed sensor, damaged wiring, restricted exhaust path, or an engine operating condition that prevented normal regeneration.

- DPF soot loading and incomplete regeneration events
- Faulty exhaust gas temperature, differential pressure, or NOx sensors
- DEF quality, level, heater, pump, or dosing faults

When a parked regen can clear a derate
A parked regeneration can be an effective solution when the truck has accumulated soot and the aftertreatment system is otherwise healthy enough to complete the process. During regeneration, exhaust temperatures rise substantially to burn off collected soot in the DPF. That requires proper safety clearance, correct operating conditions, and a technician who can monitor the process.
Before starting a regen, the technician should check for active faults that would prevent it, verify fluid levels and engine condition, inspect the exhaust area, and make sure the truck is positioned safely. If the truck is loaded with a fault that inhibits regeneration, the underlying issue must be repaired first.
A successful parked regen may reduce soot load and restore power, but it is not automatically the final answer. The technician should confirm that the system completed the cycle, review the remaining fault status, and make sure the truck is not heading straight back into an active derate. If the filter is overloaded with ash rather than soot, regeneration will not remove that restriction.
What drivers should do when a derate warning appears

Avoid repeatedly cycling the key, forcing regenerations without diagnosis, or clearing codes with a basic reader. Those steps can erase useful information or delay the repair while the original fault continues.
